Cute Ways To Help Fido Stay Cool

August 1, 2019

The Dog Days of summer are closing in fast! This can be a tough time of year for our canine companions. Keeping your pup cool on hot days is very important. The most crucial thing here is to make sure your dog always has shade and water. However, there are other things you can do to keep your pet comfortable… and some of them are super cute! Here, a New Orleans, LA vet discusses keeping Fido cool.

Cold Snacks

Who doesn’t love a cold snack on a sweltering afternoon? Make your canine buddy some pupsicles by putting kibble; broken dog treats; cooked, boneless meat; bacon bits; cheese; and/or pet-safe fruits and veggies in an ice cube tray. Pour water or sodium-free broth over it, and freeze overnight. Instant tail wags! You can also make Fido some doggie ice cream. Just be sure to only use ingredients that are safe for dogs.

Summer ‘Do

Many dogs are more comfortable in summer with a cool haircut. Fido may look adorable with a lion cut! This isn’t an across-the-board suggestion, however. Dogs with double coats generally shouldn’t get haircuts, as they can cause skin/coat issues. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Water Fun

Does your pooch like swimming? If so, take him on a fun excursion to a pet-friendly pool, beach, or swimming hole. Just be sure to put your dog’s safety first. Never leave your pet unattended near water, even just for a few minutes. You can also get Fido a kiddie pool to splash around in. Or, let him play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler. Fido may also appreciate a pet fountain.

Comfy Bed

Your canine pal will need a cool bed to relax in on those sweltering days. You can point a fan at or above Fido’s bed. Just make sure he can’t knock it over. Your pup may also enjoy a cooling pad or blanket. Another thing you can do is put a frozen towel on his bed.

Ice

On really hot days, drop a few ice cubes into your pet’s water bowl. You can also offer your canine pal one or two to chew on. Fido may also like a few frozen sodium-free broth cubes.
