9 Ways to Beat Pet Odors

September 15, 2019

Pets have a special way of filling our lives and home with love. They also have a way of filling our homes with stinky odors. Sooner or later, all pet parents end up wrinkling their noses at some unpleasant scent. We’re here to help! Here, a New Orleans, LA vet lists some great ways to defeat pet odors.

Slipcovers

Slipcovers can really help keep pet odors from settling into your furniture. Look for ones that are easy to remove and toss into the wash. Get a few different ones, so you can change the look and feel of your décor whenever you want.

Laundry

Wash your pet’s bedding every two weeks or so. Check the care label for specific instructions. Unless the label states otherwise, use an unscented detergent and the hottest cycles your washer and dryer offer. This applies to slipcovers and throw pillows, too!

Vacuum

The vacuum is a crucial weapon in the fight against pet odors. Do high-traffic areas and your furry buddy’s favorite lounging spots daily, and then do more thorough cleanings every week or so.

Pet Wipes

Our canine pals can track all sorts of dirt and germs in on their paws. Get into the habit of wiping Fido’s paws down before you let him inside. You can also wipe his coat between baths.

Plants

Plants help filter the air, which will help keep your home smelling fresh. Just stick to pet-safe ones. You can find a full list online at the ASPCA website here .

Fur Removal

Ever wonder where furniture got its name? Our furry friends may have had a hand—or paw—in that one! Squeegees work great for fur-busting sofas and chairs. You can also use a damp sponge or rubber dish gloves.

Air Purifier

A good air purifier will make a huge difference in the way your home smells. These are also great to have if you, your family members, and/or your pets have allergies.

Decorative Choices

Whenever you redecorate a room, keep your furry pal in mind. Floors are easier to clean than carpets, for instance. You may also want to get pull-down shades instead of drapes.

Clean Litterbox

Keep Fluffy’s litterbox clean! We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter every week.
