Eco-Friendly Pet Care

April 15, 2020

Earth Day is coming up quickly! These days, many people are making efforts to reduce waste and live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Why not green up your pet care routine? A New Orleans, LA vet offers some tips on how to do that below.

Shopping

When shopping for your four-legged friend, try to pick products that are locally sourced and use sustainable practices. You may also be able to buy some things in bulk.

Toys

Did you know that you can make many of your pet’s toys? Turn an old tee shirt into a rope toy for your canine companion by cutting it into small strips. Braid these together, and then braid the braids together. You can even string a tennis ball through it if you like. Tie the ends off in a big knot.

Furniture

Another great way to conserve resources is to make your pet’s bedding and furniture out of upcycled items. You can turn an old sweater, hatbox, or suitcase into a cute bed for a cat or small dog. An old stepladder can be upcycled into a cat tower. Just add planks to the steps, and cover the whole thing in sisal rope. Look online for more ideas and instructions.

Cleaning Tips

When shopping for household cleaning products, choose ones that use sustainable, earth-friendly resources. Also, get into the habit of using microfiber cloths, rather than paper towels, for cleaning messes.

Waste Not, Want Not

Make sure to clean up after your canine buddy. Dog feces are a huge source of water contamination! Look for biodegradable baggies for picking up after Fido. You can also opt for biodegradable kitty litter.

Adopt

When you’re ready for a new pet, please consider going to a rescue. Puppy mills and disreputable breeders only stay in business because people go to them!

Veterinary Care

Did you know that keeping up with your pet’s basic veterinary care needs is also good for the environment? Having your pet spayed or neutered will eliminate the possibility of them having an unexpected litter. Since overpopulation is such a huge problem, this is very important! And, by keeping up with your furry pal’s vaccinations and parasite control, you’re preventing issues that would otherwise cost both money and resources to treat.

Please contact us, your local New Orleans, LA vet clinic, for all of your pet’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
