Creating A Purrfect Catio

May 1, 2020

Do you keep your cat indoors? If so, that’s great! Kitties are both healthier and safer staying in. However, there’s no reason Fluffy can’t enjoy the best of both worlds. Why not make your pet a catio? A New Orleans, LA vet offers some tips on this below.

Choosing The Spot

If you happen to have a screened-in porch or patio, you have a great spot already. You can also use a spare bedroom, sunroom, or even a bright corner. If you own your home, and want to go all-out, you can also build Fluffy her own enclosure. You can attach it to a window so your furry pal can come and go as she pleases.

Plants

Plants will not only make your home look nice, they also filter the air. Plus, they will give your furry little buddy the chance to peek out from behind green leaves and pretend she is a ferocious predator. (Fluffy may only be ‘stalking’ a catnip mouse or even a dust bunny, but that’s beside the point.) Just be sure to stick with pet-safe plants. Some good options are Boston ferns, Ponytail palms, Money trees, Rubber trees, African violets, Swedish ivy, and Cast Iron plants. You can also add herbs, like parsley, rosemary, and thyme. Catnip, of course, is also a must. However, there are plenty more. You can find a full list on the ASPCA website here .

Purrniture

No catio is complete without some pieces of kitty furniture for Fluffy to look smug on. Cat towers are great options, as they offer your pet lounging spots, jungle gyms, nail-care stations, and give Fluffy a great vantage point. Cat towers, pet tents and tipis, and catwalks will also please your feline overlord. Of course, most kitties will also enjoy having some plain boxes and paper grocery bags to explore. If you want to go all-out, plant some cat grass in an old storage tote. When it grows in, your pet will have her own little lawn.

Entertainment

Toys don’t need to be the only entertainment your catio offers. If possible, put a bird feeder up in Fluffy’s line of sight. Don’t forget to add some furniture pieces for yourself. This can be a great spot for reading or enjoying a coffee!
