Acupuncture For Pets

August 15, 2020

Did you know that August 30th is Holistic Pet Day? Holistic pet care actually entails a variety of practices and options. One service that we are happy to offer is acupuncture, which falls under that holistic umbrella. A New Orleans, LA veterinarian discusses acupuncture for pets in this article.

Basics

Acupuncture, as you may know, is a very ancient practice, which originated in the Orient thousands of years ago. One thing that is very interesting about acupuncture is that Eastern and Western traditions view it very differently. In the east, acupuncture is seen to control the current of energy (Chi) through the body, much like the way wires conduct electricity in a building. Western medicine looks at it through a more clinical perspective, noting that the practice stimulates nerve centers, which in turn improves circulation, prompts the body to release painkillers, and facilitates healing.

Benefits

There are some truly wonderful benefits to acupuncture. First and foremost, the treatment is painless for pets. Many of our patients actually relax during their sessions! There are no drugs used, and no need for shaving or surgical incisions. Treatments can also be repeated as needed, and it isn’t uncommon to see continued improvement after multiple sessions. The risk of complication is extremely low. Your pet also won’t need any recovery time, aside from perhaps a few extra cuddles and a good nap. Last but not least, acupuncture can be used along with traditional medicine. This allows us to give our patients the best of both worlds.

Uses

Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of illnesses. One of the most common uses is to treat bone/joint issues in older dogs. It’s a truly amazing thing to see a stiff old pooch becoming mobile and playful again! Acupuncture can also be used to help pets that are afflicted by degenerative disc disease, cancer, sprains, muscle spasms, diabetes, and tendon and ligament issues, as well as those that are healing from surgery or injuries.

Tips

Although acupuncture is wonderful treatment, it definitely isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Here at Clearview Veterinary Hospital, we always offer treatment options on a case-by-case basis. That said, if you want to learn more, give us a call. It never hurts to ask!

Please reach out to us, your local New Orleans, LA vet clinic, for all of your pet’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
