8 Cute Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool

September 16, 2020

Summers in Louisiana are no joke. That heat is hard enough for people, but it’s really hard on pets. We’re here to help! Read on as a local New Orleans, LA vet lists some adorable ways to help Fido beat the heat.

Water

First and foremost, make sure Fido always has fresh water. If you have more than one pup, a yard, and/or a big house, set out multiple water stations. Clean the bowls daily, so they don’t get contaminated by dust, dirt, or germs.

Fountain

Want to really get that cute tail going? Get Fido a fountain! Some of these are very simple, and just keep the water moving in bowls. Others spray water when dogs step on a pad. This is lots of fun for Fido! It can be pretty entertaining for you as well.

Cold Snacks

Ice cream is a summer favorite that will never go out of style. You can find some for Fido in many pet stores or grocery markets. You can also make your own! Look online for recipe ideas. Just stick to things that you know are safe for your canine friend.

Cooling Vest

Does your canine pal struggle in the heat? You may want to get him a cooling vest. As the name suggests, these help keep our furry friends cool. There are a few different types. Some work through evaporation, and just need to be soaked with water. Others you would keep in the freezer.

Bandana

Want a more low-budget option? Soak a bandana with cool water, and tie it around Fido’s neck! This also makes for some adorable photos.

Swimming

While swimming isn’t right for every dog, there are some pups that absolutely love the water. If Fido is one of them, indulge him! Just be sure to stick to pet-safe swimming holes, and keep a close eye on your furry pal.

Kiddie Pool

Even dogs that don’t swim well can still enjoy splashing around. Get Fido a kiddie pool to play in on hot days. You can even find portable ones!

Spray

Another thing you can do is let your pooch play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler. We recommend getting a filter for your hose, though.
