8 Ways Your Cat Keeps You Healthy

January 15, 2021

Did you know that our feline friends are very good for us? As it turns out, owning a cat … or being owned by one … has some pretty solid benefits for you. A Metairie, LA vet lists some of them below.

Purrs

Something very special happens when Fluffy starts her engine. Purrs have some truly amazing qualities! They help heal wounds, encourage tissue and bone growth. In fact, the frequency that cats purr at is often used in physical therapy. Kitty purrs also help lower our blood pressure!

Insomnia

If you have trouble sleeping, consider letting Fluffy share the bed with you. Purring cats make great sleep aids! (Of course, some kitties will just pounce on your toes in the middle of the night, so there’s that.)

Warmth

Kitties make great lap warmers! Fluffy actually runs a bit hotter than we do, and is usually at about 102F.

Fewer Allergies

Do you have allergies? Even if you don’t personally have them, it’s likely that you know someone who does. As it turns out, kitties can also help with this, particularly in children. Kids who have pets are less likely to develop allergies than those without them!

Lower Risk Of Stroke

Did you know that people with kitties actually have a lower risk of stroke than people who don’t have cats? That difference can be as much as 40%!

Mouse Removal

This one may not be as important as it was in olden times, when Fluffy was treasured for her hunting abilities. That said, our feline companions do help keep our homes free of mice and other vermin. (Of course, some kitties bring their prey indoors, but that’s another topic.)

Laughter

No surprises here! No matter how many cats you have, how old they are, or what their personalities are like, you’ll find yourself chuckling at some kitty antics this year. Fluffy is always cute and entertaining, but at times she is absolutely hilarious. As the saying says, laughter is the best medicine!

Comfort

Cat s really do have a way of comforting us. Fluffy’s affectionate cuddles and purrs can be very soothing in troubled times. In fact, our feline buddies are very helpful for people who are struggling with grief, anxiety, or depression.
