Caring for a Scaredy Cat

March 1, 2021

Our feline pa tients all have their own purrsonalities. Some are very bold. (Fluffy can sometimes be a bit too bold for her own good.) Others are laid back and relaxed. And then we have kitties that are very shy and fearful. If your pet falls into the latter category, read on! A New Orleans, LA vet offers some care tips for timid cat below.

Hiding Spots

Both animals and people tend to react to potential threats in one or two ways: by attacking or retreating. When it comes to that fight or flight reflex, a shy cat is often going to run and hide. Give your kitty lots of places to retreat to. These can be paper bags, kitty tends, or even spots under a bed or couch. If Fluffy is a climber, give her some vertical space, like a pet tower.

Avoid Confrontation

At the end of the day, kitties are quite small. Many of them get very scared if they feel trapped or cornered. Don’t pet or pick up your furry friend against her will, and don’t force attention on her when she isn’t in the mood. It’s very important for Fluffy to feel as though she has control over interactions. (Our feline overlords often completely wrap their humans around their paws, but that’s another topic.)

Kitty Calming Products

If your fuzzy buddy is really nervous, she may benefit from cat-calming products, such as treats or sprays. In extreme cases, medication may be beneficial. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Playtime

A fun play session will help your kitty burn off any nervous tension she has. Think of this as Fluffy’s equivalent to hitting the gym or punching a sandbag. You could almost say that playing helps your feline pal connect with her inner lioness! After taking her frustration out on a catnip mouse, your kitty will naturally be calmer.

Doctor’s Visits

Speaking of veterinarians, make sure Fluffy sees her doctor regularly. You want to be sure that there are no medical issues causing or contributing to her fears.

TLC

Last but not least, just focus on giving your pet great care, and making her feel loved. Fluffy may just naturally be a bit shy. There’s nothing wrong with that, in and of itself.
