Litterbox Setup Tips

September 15, 2021

Cats certainly have some wonderful qualities. Our feline pals are not only absolutely adorable, they’re also loads of fun. Kitties are also quite easy keepers: they don’t need baths or training, and will use litterboxes to see to their needs. While setting up Fluffy’s litterbox isn’t exactly rocket science, there are some things to keep in mind. A New Orleans, LA vet lists some of them below.

Litter Types

For the most part, you can use any type of litter that you (and your cat) like. There are a few exceptions to this rule, though. If you have a kitten, avoid clay or clumping litters for now. Baby felines are quite clumsy, and may accidentally ingest litter as they’re learning how to cat. This can be quite dangerous!

Number Of Facilities

How many cats you have also factors in. If you have more than one kitty, you’ll need more than one litterbox. Provide at least one box per feline, at least.

Odors

We can’t really discuss litterboxes without at least mentioning odors. Keeping your pet’s box clean is the best way to combat bad smells, but it may not always be enough. Setting out some pet-safe plants can help quite a bit. (The ASPCA has a list here.) You can also use timed-release scent dispensers and/or deodorizers, like baking soda.

Placement

Choosing the right spot is also important. Fluffy’s litterbox should be in a spot that offers her some privacy, isn’t too hot or damp, and is easy for her to access. If you have enough room, you may want to consider installing a kitty door and motion light in an extra closet or bathroom.

Concealment

If you live in a smaller place, it may be harder trying to find a good spot. Concealing your pet’s powder room may be a better option. You can now find many pieces of furniture made just for this purrpose. You can also go the DIY route, and hide Fluffy’s litterbox behind a folding screen, or perhaps under an end table with four legs. Another option is to repurpose a storage tote, buffet, or trunk. All you really need to do is cut a kitty access hole in one side. You’ll be able to use the existing door or doors to access it.
