Adopting A Shelter Cat In Summer

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! While there’s definitely never a bad time to adopt a shelter cat, shelters are often overloaded at this time of year with an influx of kittens. This is a purrfect time to adopt a new feline friend! Read on as a local New Orleans, LA vet offers some advice on adopting a cat in summer.

Getting Settled

We often recommend starting kitties out in a small area, such as a spare room or utility room, at first. Just make sure that Fluffy’s room isn’t too hot!

Meet The Vet

While most shelter cats have been fixed, your feline buddy will need a nose-to-tail exam. She’ll also need to get caught up on her preventative care. Fleas, ticks, heartworms, and other parasites are out in droves at this time of year! We also strongly advise microchipping.

Choose Good Food

Normally, we recommend changing pets’ diets slowly. However, because many shelters rely on donations, Fluffy may already be eating several different brands. You’ll want to get her on a high-quality food that is appropriate for her age and health. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Brushing

You don’t want to force Fluffy to submit to being brushed if she doesn’t like it. However, many kitties really enjoy being pampered. This is also a good way to bond with your pet!

Keep Kitty In

We can’t overstate how important it is to keep your furry pal indoors. Cats that go outdoors face some very serious threats, such as cars and weather. Plus, Fluffy could easily get lost in a strange area.

Get Emergency Supplies

You’ll need to make a run to the pet store. While you’re there, pick up things to make your furry buddy an emergency bag. That means some extra food, toys, and treats, some bedding, a pet first-aid kit, water, a litterbox and litter, and dishes. You’ll also want a travel carrier … which you can store these things in.

Seasonal Luxuries

Fluffy may need time to settle in and feel safe. Offering kitty luxuries can help speed up that process. For summer, things like pet fountains, chilled broth, hammock beds, and cold treats can all be very effective at getting that motor going.
