Is your dog in or near his golden years? Fido will still be as cute and lovable as ever as he ages, but his needs will change a little. Your pet won’t be as active as he once was, and he may need some extra TLC. Here, a New Orleans, LA vet offers advice on keeping senior dogs happy and healthy.
Your canine friend will never outgrow his love of snacks! Feed your pup a good, high-quality diet, but don’t go overboard with treats. Because senior dogs aren’t as active as their younger counterparts, it’s easy for them to gain weight. If Fido becomes obese, he could be at risk for some very serious health problems. Follow your vet’s recommendations.
There are few things more adorable than a senior dog peacefully snoring in his doggy bed. Orthopedic beds are great for older pets, because of the extra support they offer.
Be sure to keep Fido’s claws trimmed. If his nails are too long, they’ll become uncomfortable and make it harder for him to walk, which is hard on his bones and joints.
You don’t want to overexert Fido, but don’t let him become a complete couch potato, either. Your furry friend will still need some exercise, even if it’s just a short walk.
Fido may have trouble climbing stairs, getting on and off the couch, or getting in and out of the car. Pet ramps or stairs will make these things easier for him.
Older dogs often become quite sensitive to heat and cold. Keep Fido indoors as much as possible when the weather is bad.
Fido will both look and feel better with veterinary care. Keep up with your pup’s appointments! Many senior dogs develop medical conditions, such as arthritis. There are now many options to help pets feel better, and improve their quality of life. Preventative care, such as parasite control, is also important.
Fido’s golden years are a special time. Many dogs become super sweet and affectionate at this stage of their lives, and really just want to be loved. Spend lots of quality time with your beloved pet, and keep that cute tail wagging!
