Walk Your Dog Week

October 1, 2020

It’s National Walk Your Dog Week! Of course, for many people, taking Fido for a stroll is a daily occurrence. Walks aren’t just important for sanitary reasons, however. They’re also great for your pooch, both mentally and physically. A New Orleans, LA vet discusses walking Fido below.

Gear

Your canine pal will need gear that is both sturdy and comfortable.. Fit is very important. You should be able to fit two fingers beneath Fido’s collar. Some dogs, such as smaller breeds and brachycephalic pups, will do better with a harness than a collar. As for the leash, choose a sturdy one. Nylon is a good option, as it won’t weaken over time the way leather does.

Heat

Summers can be scorching hot at this time of year. You may want to bring a water bottle with an attached dispenser along for Fido, especially if you’re planning to be gone a while.

Safety

Always put your furry friend’s safety first. When walking on the side of the road, walk facing towards oncoming traffic. You’ll also want to pay attention to the terrain. Steer Fido around potential objects, such as broken glass. If you wear earbuds, keep the volume low, so you can hear what’s going on around you. Safety is also a big concern when walking at night. Stick to safe, well-lit spots, and don’t stay out too long.

Benefits

Just like people, pets need proper activity to stay healthy. Those daily strolls are a great workout for Fido! Walks also provide your canine buddy with mental stimulation. As you probably know, dogs have super sensitive noses. Your pup can pick up all sorts of information by sniffing grass. This is sort of like the doggy version of reading a newspaper.

Exploring

Just like people, dogs tend to get bored with the same-old same-old. Let Fido enjoy a change of scenery sometimes. Take him to a park or beach, or explore a new trail.

Hacks

Do you find yourself running around to collect various items before taking Fido out? Designate a bag, pouch, or jacket for walking your four-legged friend. Use that to store anything you may need, like keys, earbuds, treats, a phone charger, and waste baggies. That way, you only need to grab one thing!
