7 'Pawsome' Resolutions for People With Senior Dogs

January 1, 2021

Is your pooch aged seven or older? If so, Fido is starting 2021 out as an official retiree. Dogs have a special way of becoming even more adorable as they age. Why not include your pup in your resolutions for 2021? A New Orleans, LA vet suggests a few ways to do that below.

T ake Relaxing Walks

Your dog’s activity needs will change over time. Instead of vigorous play sessions, Fido may only need a short walk every day. Let your pup pick the pace, and be careful not to overexert him. Enjoy those slow strolls with your furry bff!

Revisit Nutrition

If you haven’t changed Fido’s diet in a while, it may be time for an adjustment. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes and supplements.

Provide A Good Bed

Fido will have a hard time getting comfortable on a thin pad. Make sure he has a comfy doggy bed to curl up in. Orthopedic beds are a great choice for older dogs, especially large breeds.

Keep Up With Grooming

Brushing and bathing Fido regularly will remove dead fur and dander, and help keep his coat soft and clean. This, in turn, will help keep him comfortable. Nail trims and dental care are also important!

Keep That Tail Going

Our canine companions often develop a super sweet and lovable demeanor as they age. You may find that Fido becomes even more affectionate over time. (Bonus: he’ll be less likely to engage in unwanted behaviors, like digging and chewing.) Be sure to pay your pet lots of attention this year!

Visit The Vet

Fido will definitely benefit from more frequent veterinary appointments as he grows older. Senior dogs are at higher risk of developing many different medical problems, such as diabetes and arthritis. Staying on top of your pet’s exams will increase the odds of any developing issues being caught early. This is always beneficial! Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Enjoy This Time

The only complaint we have about dogs is that we just don’t get enough time with them. This stage of your pet’s life may seem bittersweet, but it is very special. Spend as much time with Fido as you can!
