Points Of Being A Responsible Dog Owner

It’s Responsible Dog Ownership Month! This is a very important topic. Fido is a wonderful pet, but it’s very easy to forget that his needs are a bit different from ours. Here, a New Orleans, LA vet lists some key facets of responsible dog ownership.

Training

You don’t necessarily have to teach your canine buddy to fetch your slippers or turn the lights off and on. However, Fido definitely should know—and obey—basic doggy commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come. This is important for petiquette, but it’s also a must for safety reasons.

Restriction

Dogs are very, very adventurous, and they love to run and explore new places. However, that doesn’t mean that letting Fido run around off-leash is a good idea. Even the most loyal pups can bolt if they get spooked or spot a squirrel!

Comfort

Fido can’t tell you if he’s uncomfortable, and he can’t turn the heater up or clean his own fur. Make sure that your furry pal has basic doggy comforts. A good bed is a must. Your pooch may also need a jacket in cold weather and/or a cooling vest in summert.

Veterinary Care

It’s probably safe to say that Fido would prefer a game of Fetch to a doctor’s appointment. However, he will look and feel better with good care. Vaccines and parasite control will protect him from dangerous diseases and parasites, while exams can reveal developing medical issues, many of which can be addressed best if caught early. You’ll also need to bring your four-legged buddy in immediately if you spot any signs of illness.

Grooming

Baths aren’t on Fido’s list of favorite things either, but they are necessary. Man’s Best Friend may not care for the suds-and-water part, but he does seem to love feeling fresh and clean after. Nail trims and dental care are also important.

Exercise/Stimulation

Fitness is just as important for pets as it is for people. Make sure that Fido is getting the right amount and type of exercise. For most pups, that means a daily walk, at the very least. Don’t think of this as a chore: it’s actually a wonderful chance for you to spend some time with your canine friend.
