Caring for an Older Cat

July 15, 2021

Is your feline buddy getting up there in years? Fluffy will go through many of the same changes as we will over time, but she’ll still be the same cute, lovable pet as always. Your pet will benefit from some extra TLC as she gets older, though. Read on as a New Orleans, LA veterinarian lists a few things you can do to keep your furry bff happy, healthy, and purring in her golden years.

Food

Proper nutrition is crucial at all stage of Fluffy’s life. Make sure Fluffy is getting a good, nutritious food. Don’t let her get obese, though: extra pounds can really wreak havoc on your kitty’s health. Ask your vet for specific advice on this, including portion sizes, meal times, and tips on changing your furry pal over to a senior-formula pet food.

Bedding

Your kitty will somehow manage to sleep even more in her golden years than she did before. Set out lots of comfy beds for her to curl up in. Make sure they are easy for her to get in and out of.

Litterbox

Fluffy may have trouble with a litterbox that has high sides. Get her a litterbox made just for older cats. These will be easier for your kitty to get in and out of.

Veterinary Care

Your feline friend will benefit from more frequent veterinary appointments as she grows older. Your vet may recommend bringing her in every three or six months, instead of just once a year. You’ll also want to watch for signs of illness, such as a lack of appetite, lethargy, fever, and respiratory issues. If you notice anything unusual, contact your vet right away.

Exercise

Kitties need regular activity to stay healthy. Fluffy won’t be as agile or frisky as she once was, but she’ll still benefit from playing. Hold a laser pointer or wand toy for her to pounce on. Even a few minutes of kitty playtime will benefit her.

Love

Keep that motor going! Fluffy deserves to feel loved and safe for the rest of her days. You may find that your feline companion becomes even more lovable and cuddly as she ages. Just be very gentle when handling her.
