Keeping Your Pet Hydrated

July 15, 2019

Summer is here! One of the best ways to keep your pet safe and comfortable on those scorching days is to make sure that he or she is properly hydrated. A Metairie, LA vet offers a few tips on how to do that in this article.

Water Stations

First and foremost, make sure that your pet always has plenty of water. If your furry friend spends time outdoors, keep water bowls in the yard as well. (Note: never use glass bowls on wooden decks, as this is a fire hazard.)  People with large homes and/or more than one animal companion may need multiple water stations. Clean the bowls daily, as otherwise dirt and bacteria will quickly accumulate.

Snacks

Keep hydration in mind when giving your pet treats on hot days. You’ll want to choose things that have a high moisture content. Sodium-free beef or chicken broth is a good bet for both dogs and cats. Fluffy may also enjoy some canned tuna or chicken in water, or perhaps some kitty milk.

Automatic Waterers

Have you ever found your pet’s bowl dry? Automated waterers can help ensure that your furry buddy never runs out of water.

Fountains

Many pets actually prefer to drink running water. You may want to get your four-legged pal a water fountain. There are many different ones to choose from. Some are made for indoor use, while others are meant for outside. For instance, you can get doggy fountains that spray water into the air when Fido steps on the pad. Needless to say, this is super cute to watch!

Food

Canned food has a higher moisture content than kibble, so offering it can increase your pet’s water intake a bit. If you do give your pet dry food, consider adding some water to it. The exact amount you would want to use will depend on your furry pal’s size and diet, so ask your vet for specific advice.

Water On The Go

This one is mostly for Fido. Always bring water for your canine pal when you take him off your property. You can get a doggy water bottle with an attached bowl, or some collapsible plastic dishes. We also recommend keeping a gallon of water in your car at all times.
