7 Great Reasons To Play With Your Cat Daily

April 15, 2019

Cats are very cute when they are feeling playful. It’s hard not to be charmed by a frisky kitty pouncing on a catnip mouse or chasing after that elusive red dot from a laser pointer. Actually, playing with your feline buddy is one of the best things you can do for her! Below, a Metairie, LA vet lists some reasons to go get that wand toy.

Exercise

Cats certainly enjoy their beauty rest. Fluffy can sleep up to 20 hours a day. While this is cute, catching Z’s won’t burn anywhere near as many calories as catching mice. Playing can help your kitty active, which will keep her strong physically. Even a few minutes of running and jumping will be beneficial.

Stimulation

Mental stimulation is just as beneficial and important for kitties as it is for people. Fluffy has to focus to land those tricky run/pounce/roll combinations. This is great for her mind, and can help ward off cognitive decay as she ages. It’s also a great boredom buster!

Bonding

When you hold a feather toy or laser pointer for Fluffy, she’ll know that you’re making an effort to interact with her and keep her entertained. This is a wonderful way to bond with your cat and make her feel loved. It will also definitely score you some purrs and cuddles, which are both pretty great in our book.

Burn Excess Energy

If your kitty is a furry little bundle of energy, playing will help tire her out. After a fun play session, Fluffy will be tired, and probably more interested in curling up for a nap than in knocking everything off your counters.

Healthy Outlet

Is your kitty grumpy? Playing will give your pet a healthy outlet for any anxiety or anger she feels. It’s much better for your cat to attack a fuzzy ball than to lash out at you!

Soothe Tensions

If you have more than one cat, playing with both your feline friends together can help them form positive associations with each other. This will also help Fluffy and Mittens overcome kitty jealousy.

It’s Fun

Last but not least, playing with Fluffy will be fun for both of you. This is a great way to wind down after a long day!
