Cats On Laps: Why Fluffy’s Favorite Napping Spot May Be You

September 15, 2023

Our feline friends are very unique little individuals. They all have their own unique voices, quirks, and purrsonalities. One area where cats vary widely from one another is in how much they like to snuggle. Some kitties are little cuddlebugs, while others prefer to be admired from a distance. Others? Not so much. A local New Orleans, LA vet offers some insight into lapcats below.

Why Do Cats Like People’s Laps?

You’ve probably noticed that our feline buddies are very tired. Fluffy is always on the lookout for warm, comfy napping spots. Our laps are both warm and comfortable, and they also happen to be just about the right size for kitties to snuggle up on. Comfort aside, this is also a way for cats to show affection. (Kneading is also a sign of love, albeit a more painful one.)

Why Are Some Cats Lap Cats And Others Not?

There are a few factors that come into play here. One is how and when your cat was socialized. Kittens tend to love being held and snuggled, as it makes them feel safe. However, if your furry friend was born a stray, she may have missed out on some of that crucial early socialization, which would make her naturally wary. Your feline pal’s purrsonality is another factor. Just like people, cats are all unique: some are just more affectionate than others. Keep in mind that Fluffy is both predator and prey in the wild. Being held may make her feel vulnerable and/or uneasy.

How Do I Make My Kitty A Lap Cat?

Ultimately, you can’t force your furry pal to enjoy snuggling if it just isn’t her thing. However, if your pet is wary but ultimately undecided, you may be able to bring her around. The biggest thing is to never force attention on your cat. While it’s important to pet, talk to, and play with Fluffy, you should never try to pick her up if she isn’t feeling it, or force her to stay on your lap if she doesn’t want to. Just make sure your furry friend feels loved and safe. That entails giving her great care, and showing affection without smothering her. Offering kitty favorites like catnip, treats, and toys, and taking time to play with your pet, may change her mind. If not, that’s okay, too. Some kitties just prefer to be admired from a distance!
