Holidays With Kittens

December 15, 2021

Happy Holidays! Has a kitten just joined your family? If so, you definitely have some super cute moments ahead of you. Little Fluffy is always lovable, but she somehow manages to be extra adorable around the holidays. Of course, you may also have your hands full keeping your tiny furball out of trouble! A local New Orleans, LA vet offers some tips on holiday kitten care below.

Petproofing

It’s a good thing kittens are cute, because they are tiny forces of mischief. Petproofing is a must! Anything small or sharp is dangerous. That includes things like jewelry, safety pins, and craft kit pieces, as well as seasonal decorations like ornaments and ornament hooks. Little Fluffy also can’t resist anything with ropes or cords. Tinsel, garlands, and ribbons are all choking and entanglement risks. You’ll also need to be careful with seasonal plants, such as poinsettias and lilies, as these are toxic to cats. Ask your vet for more information.

Socialization

Socialization is crucial to your furry pal’s mental and emotional development. This has to happen while your adorable pet is still young. Have people stop by to cuddle and play with little Fluffy. (You probably won’t have much trouble finding volunteers.)

Pint-Sized Pet

When your fuzzy buddy is all grown up, she’ll be pretty easy to spot. However, right now, she doesn’t make a very big lump under blankets, and can fit into some really small spaces. Kittens are at high risk of being stepped on and/or getting caught in doors or under recliners. Keep a close eye on your tiny feline! If you’re having guests, put her in a quiet back room with food, bedding, toys, and a litterbox, and let people visit her there.

Gifts

Don’t forget to fill your feline friend’s stockings! Toys and treats are the classic options. Your little ball of fur will also appreciate kitty furniture, scratching posts or boards, and, of course, some empty boxes.

Cuddles

Little Fluffy’s cute toddler stage won’t last long. Take lots of pictures of this special time! Also, just pay lots of attention to your pint-sized friend. Talk to her, play with her, and let her snooze on your lap. A happy kitten is the purrfect final touch to any holiday scene!
