Popular Plants That Are Toxic for Pets

June 15, 2021

One of the great things about living in Louisiana is that it’s a haven for gardeners. Our warm weather and sunshine allow many beautiful plants to thrive all year round. However, if you have a pet, you’ll need to be very careful about what you plant. Many plants—including several very popular ones—are toxic to our furry pals. A Metairie, LA vet lists some of the most dangerous ones below.

 Azaleas

Azaleas are extremely toxic to pets. While many dogs and cats won’t eat them, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Avoid putting these in areas your four-legged buddy can access.

Sago Palms

Sago Palms are extremely toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if ingested. Err on the side of caution, and avoid these altogether.

Lilies

Many lilies are extremely toxic to pets, especially cats. Kitties can go into kidney failure from eating them. Some of the most dangerous ones include the Calla Lily, Easter Lily, Tiger Lily, Day Lily, and Asian Lily. All parts of the plant are toxic, including the leaves and stems. Some warning signs include drooling, vomiting, and reduced appetite.

Caladiums

Also known as Elephant Ears, these popular plants can pose a serious risk to your furry best buddy. Symptoms include swelling of the tongue or mouth, vomiting, drooling, and trouble swallowing.

Pothos

Pothos—or Devil’s Ivy, as they’re also called–are very popular indoor plants. They can thrive in low light and tend to survive even the worst brown thumbs. However, they are toxic to pets. Warning signs include drooling, inflammation and irritation of the mouth and tongue, vomiting, and trouble breathing.

Bulbed Plants

While tulips and daffodils are likely the most common bulbed plants you’d need to be careful of, you really should consider anything that grows from a bulb a danger to your furry friend. This includes garlic and onions, too!

Tips

These are just a few dangerous plants to look out for. The ASPCA has many more listed on their website here . Some other unsafe plants include jade plants, aloe vera, rhododendrons, philodendrons, carnations, and chrysanthemums. If you aren’t sure what plants you have, or whether they are toxic or not, take a few minutes to check. It could save your beloved pet’s life!
