Signs Of Arthritis In Dogs

February 15, 2020

Did you know that arthritis affects over half of dogs over age seven? If your pooch is entering—or already in—his golden years, you’ll want to watch for warning signs. As is the case with any health issues in pets, the sooner Fido is diagnosed, the better! A New Orleans, LA vet lists some things to watch for below.
Limping
Limping is one of the most common signs of arthritis. At first, Fido may only limp a little bit, usually when he first gets up. Over time, the limp will get worse.
Nibbling/Licking
Dogs often lick or nibble at sore spots. If Fido keeps fussing at a specific spot, such as the base of his tail or his paws, he may be reacting to pain from arthritis.
Reduced Interest In Play
Arthritis can really put a damper on your pup’s playful streak. If your pet’s toys are gathering dust, arthritis could be to blame.
Weight Gain
Many arthritic dogs become less active as their conditions worsen. This can cause them to gain weight. Unfortunately, that added weight will only exacerbate the issue, as extra pounds will put even more strain on Fido’s already-fragile joints.
Mobility Issues
Your furry friend may start having trouble going up and down stairs, climbing  in and out of the car, or, assuming he is allowed, getting on and off the bed. Eventually, he’ll have difficulty laying down or standing up. Fido may also become reluctant to do things he used to enjoy, like running or playing.
Behavioral Issues
You may notice some changes in your four-legged pal’s demeanor. Fido may seem depressed, and he may withdraw a bit. He may also sleep more than he used to. Dogs with arthritic pain also sometimes whimper, whine, or bark to vocalize their discomfort.
Tips
If you notice any of these warning signs in your canine friend, the first thing to do is get Fido properly diagnosed. While this painful condition cannot be cured, there are many treatment options for it. Laser therapy can both help improve your pet’s mobility, reduce his pain, and help him feel better. You’ll also want to get some specific advice on your dog’s home care needs.
