Common Cat Care Mistakes

Kitties have tried very hard to make us think that they are completely independent, but that really isn’t the case. Fluffy is quite small and vulnerable, and needs lots of love and care to thrive! Here, a Metairie, LA vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

We know, our feline friends spend a rather ridiculous amount of time sleeping. However, Fluffy will still need something to do when she’s awake. Make sure she has lots of toys to bat under the couch. Your kitty will also enjoy having lots of things to explore. This doesn’t need to cost you much. Boxes, paper bags, and newspaper tunnels will work just fine.

Proper nutrition is a cornerstone of any good pet care routine. Overfeeding is one common issue, and a big part of the reason we have so many chubby patients. While fat cats are definitely cute, they also face some serious health issues. Follow your vet’s nutritional recommendations, including serving sizes and suitable treats.

While Fluffy may not be exactly thrilled about coming to visit us, it’s definitely in her best interests. We recommend that all cats be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on their vaccines and parasite control. It’s also important to make an appointment immediately if you know or suspect that your kitty is ill. Cats often try to hide signs of illness, so you may not even realize anything is wrong until your pet is quite sick!

Cleaning litterboxes isn’t the best part of having a cat, but it is necessary. After all, no one likes a dirty bathroom!

Kitties are rather adventurous, and often enjoy fun outdoor activities, like rolling around in the driveway and refusing to come when called. However, Fluffy will be safer and healthier staying inside, where she is safe from cars, weather, predators, and other hazards. Instead, bring the outdoors in for your feline buddy by setting out pet-safe plants and giving her a cat tower to climb, instead of a tree.

Cats are very cute, but they aren’t purrfect. However, you should never punish Fluffy for misbehaving. You will likely just scare her, which can cause her to become anxious and wary of you.
