Keeping Your Pet Hydrated

July 15, 2022
Did you know that July is Pet Hydration Month? This is a very important topic, particularly in the hotter areas of the country … such as ours. One of the most important parts of keeping your furry best friend safe from that scorching Louisiana heat is making sure they always have plenty of water. A New Orleans, LA vet offers some advice on this below.

Water Stations

Pets should always have clean water available, no matter what time of year it is. This is especially important in summer, though. You may need to set out more than one water bowl.

Fountains

Many of our four-legged pals prefer to drink running water. This may be because in the wild, it’s usually less likely to be contaminated than standing water would be. You may want to get Fido and Fluffy a pet fountain.

Treats

Consider moisture content when choosing your pet’s treats. Fido may enjoy some doggy ice cream, or perhaps some homemade popsicles. Fluffy can also have some squeezable treats. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Broth

Another trick? Offer your furry bff some sodium-free broth. You can keep some in the fridge and offer Fido or Fluffy a chilled bowl. Or, pour some into an ice cube tray and freeze it, and give it to them that way. For extra purrs or tail wags, put some kibble or treats in the tray before adding the broth.

Out And About

Do you like to take your canine pal to parks or trails? Be sure to always bring water along for him. You may want to get into the habit of keeping water and collapsible dishes in your car. You can get some that fold down small enough to fit into a wallet or backpack pocket. Fido may also enjoy a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. These are great to have on the go!

Schedule

This one is more about avoiding dehydration, but it still counts. When it’s really hot out, walk and play with your pets in the mornings and evenings, when it’s a bit cooler out. Limit your furry friend’s outdoor time during the hottest parts of the day. Let Fido and Fluffy ride the heat out in rooms with fans or A/C/ As your New Orleans, LA animal clinic, we’re committed to providing excellent service and top-notch veterinary care. Call us anytime!
