Going Shopping for a Senior Dog

November 15, 2020

It’s Adopt A Senior Pet Month! While we love seeing any dog getting a second chance, it’s particularly heartwarming when older pooches get adopted. Senior dogs make wonderful pets! Of course, you’ll need to hit the pet store before bringing your canine buddy home. A New Orleans, LA vet offers some advice on going shopping for Fido below.

Food

Proper nutrition will go a long way towards keeping your canine buddy in good health. Fido will need a high-quality, senior-formula dog food. He may also benefit from certain supplements. However, don’t make sudden changes to your dog’s diet. Changes should take place slowly, over the course of days or even weeks. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Bedding

A comfy bed is a definite must! Orthopedic beds are great for older dogs. Get something with a waterproof, removable cover, and then put a soft, washable blanket over that. That way, if Fido has any accidents, cleaning up will be easy. You may want to get a few different beds, so your cute pet has comfy spots in every room.

Toys

Fido won’t be as playful as a puppy, but he’ll still need some toys. Choose things that were made specifically for senior dogs. Some of these may light up or make noise, making them easier to track. Others will be soft on your furry pal’s mouth. Puzzle toys are also a good choice for older dogs, as they will entertain your pup without tiring him out.

Senior Facilities

Small touches will help keep your furry friend both safe and comfortable. Raised dishes are easier for older pups to eat from, while pet ramps or stairs may help Fido get in and out of the car more easily. You may also want to get some nightlights, to help your pooch find his way around more easily after dark.

Other Supplies

You may want to pick up a few other things, such as a stain remover, waste baggies, and a doggy water bottle for when you’re on the go. If you have a yard, Fido may enjoy having a kiddie pool to splash around in. Of course, treats are also a must. They’re also great at getting that tail going!
